The next 3 depict the historic museum at 7 Castle Hill, which is the oldest residence in PE still in working order. It was built in the mid 1820s and is furnished with fascinating items from that period, including a wonderful dolls house. In the courtyard, the old water pump and built in sandstone benches are still there.

The other night, I woke up at about 2 am, and was sitting on the balcony enjoying the view of lights reflecting on the water at Port St Francis. So I grabbed a canvas and decided to capture the peaceful scene.

This is a view of the skyline looking at Richmond Hill from the opposite cliff in Central. I love the simplicity of design of these early settler buildings.

Title: Aftermath of the Great Gale in 1902

Size: 900x 800mm

This was a fairly ambitious one, because it was done from a vintage b&w photograph. I wanted to bring in colour, so that it was not just a straight reproduction of the photo, but kept it muted to retain the atmosphere created by the foul weather and stricken ships. I emphasised the little lighthouse on the hill near the middle, because of the irony that, when nature really decides to lash out, none of our puny safety measures can help, and we are reminded that, though we behave as if we are Lords of the Planet, we need to be brought down to size every now and then, like the little spectators gazing in awe at the results of the storm.

new year, new work

I have 2 Exhibitions coming up early this year.

The first is Historic Port Elizabeth from 12th to 27th February at the EPSAC Gallery. I will be exhibiting with Vilia Offerman, who is sought after for her great watercolours, and well known local photographer Bob Binell, who has a fantastic collection of vintage photos of early PE.

The next is in mid March, at the Cuyler Street Gallery, which I am delighted to get into, as the owner, Tossie Theron is a respected authority on Eastern Cape art, and a great promoter of local artists.

I love this little church which we see from our dining room window, the proportions are wonderful, as are the two different stone crosses on the gables. Over the years I have photographed it in a wide variety of light conditions.
